Studio Classes

Using a photograph of a subject, Clarence will demonstrate how to sketch the subject, define dark shapes, and then roughly define color areas. After the demonstration, Clarence will assist students in completing their beginning underpainting of this basic sketch. The last hour of the class will be spent completing the painting with continuing supervision. Each two-hour session will consist of methods to paint trees, rocks, dirt, and sky. Expect to be busy!

Students will learn the principles of oil painting, including:

• Subject selection - from life and photography - cropping, editing, and color palette development
• Point-to-point drawing
• Value sketches
• Color wash, palette development
• Final layers and finishing touches

Students are met "where they are" and coached in a hands-on style - if you are one who learns by doing, this is your class.

• Using light and dark shapes to establish a strong underpainting
• Mixing vibrant colors
• Getting the most from your reference material
• Application of paint and various ways to achieve dynamic brushwork

Sean closely works with each painter to develop their overall skills, regardless of their experience level. All levels are welcome!
