About
Sandra Sell brings a sculptor's precision and a veteran's discipline to wood, transforming raw material into forms that hover between the figural and the purely organic. A native of New Hampshire, Sell completed a full career in the military before relocating to Arkansas, where she earned an M.A. in Art from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. That second chapter proved generative: Arkansas's landscape and its rich tradition of craft-based making appear to have quietly shaped the warmth and groundedness that distinguish her work.
Sell works primarily in carved wood, and her recent sculptures reveal an artist deeply attuned to what each piece of material asks of her. Assurance Stance (2025) suggests a striding figure without committing to one — its polished surfaces and gestural roughness in dialogue, modernist in its restraint. Grounded in Thought (2025) pursues a similar tension, the hand-carved form at once minimal and psychologically present. Where those works feel inward and meditative, Genuine Connection (2025) turns outward with vermillion-stained relief and burl wood that crackles with rhythmic energy. In the Weeds (2025) draws on botanical reference with deep magentas and charcoal tones carved into dynamic vertical movement, while 6246474 Fluted Arch (2025) channels architectural influence into flowing, honey-toned abstraction. Across the series, honey, sienna, ochre, and warm earth tones recur — a palette that keeps even the most abstract works tethered to the natural world.
Since 2007, Sell's sculpture has appeared in more than fifty-two exhibitions across the United States. Her work enters public life through significant permanent collections, including the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, the Asheville Art Museum in North Carolina, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and the Historic Arkansas Museum in Little Rock, alongside numerous private collections.
Sell regards the sharing of her practice as integral to the work itself. Through artist residencies, studio assistantships, teaching, demonstrations, and addresses to arts organizations, she has made her creative process visible and accessible to a wide range of audiences — an extension, perhaps, of the same directness and purposefulness she brings to every piece of wood she lifts from the studio floor.
